Training your dog with a clicker is referred to asclicker training, and it offers a couple of advantages over using a voice marker.

1. Quicker and more precise – Many find it quicker to press a button at the exact moment your dog performs a task than saying a word.

2. Constant tone – The sound the clicker makes is the same every time. The sound of your voice can change, such as when you have a cold.

Now, you may be wondering:

Is a clicker necessary to train your dog?

Even if the worst case scenario is true, a clicker is still an effective training aid.

Interestingly, the majority of professional dog trainers we interviewed preferred using a clicker. They listed precision as the number one reason. Besides, when training dozens of dogs each day, your voice can get raspy when constantly yelling voice commands.

When I was a beginner with no previous dog training experience, I had a preference for using the clicker. Make no mistake, you cancertainly train your dog without a clicker. It is by no means an essential product. But based on my experience, if I had the choice to train with a clicker or skip it completely, I would use a clicker every time.

Still on the fence? Fortunately, clickers are very affordable. Even if this isanother product that gets lost in the depths of your junk drawer, it will only cost you a couple of dollars.

Not training your dog or don’t plan to in the future? Then, you don’t need a clicker. Spend your money on dog products youdo need, such as dog bowls and dog toys!

It might surprise you to learn that clickers are not just used for training dogs. They can also be used to train cats, horses, dolphins, elephants and even children (seriously!). Even so, clickers are most commonly used to train dogs. And, that’s exactly what I focus on in this clicker review.

Our testing process

At DogLab, we take reviewing darn seriously. We would never recommend a product that we wouldn’t happily use with our own precious pooches. That’s why we thoroughly tested every clicker featured in this guide.

By the end of the process, we spent a combined 100+ hours researching, testing and reviewing the most popular (and even some unpopular) dog training clickers on the market.

Rounding up the dog clickers

It all started with choosing which clickers to test.

We soon learned that there isn’t a wide selection of clickers on the market. While there are hundreds of different brands of clickers, many are just rebranded. What I mean is that the clicker is identical in design and performance but has a different brand name.

Once we weeded out the duplicates, not many clickers remained. Given that clickers are such an affordable product, we decided to test all of them!

All up, we put 8 different brands to the test.

With our list complete, it was time to go shopping. Each clicker featured in our review was purchased from Amazon.com or PetSmart. Yep, at DogLab, we buy every product at the exact same price you would pay.

Once our clickers were delivered, it was time to test them!

How did we test the dog clickers?

Since clickers are used to train dogs, it makes sense to test each clicker while training a dog, right? I took full advantage of this review to train my pup while getting paid for it, thanks DogLab!

Harper

Breed: German Shepherd x Border Collie mix

Harper has learned new tricks! She can now “wait,” “go ahead” and be recalled when off the leash. Who knew a clicker, treats and training was everything needed to turn this disobedient pup into a well-behaved pooch?

I also tested the clickers on a variety of other dogs, including a particularly timid Yorkie, a deaf French Bulldog and a playful Labrador, to see how they would respond to the sound of each clicker.

Speaking of sound, I used a sound meter to rank each clicker by how loud it was. The nosier the clicker, the higher the reading.

Durability – Each clicker was stepped on with a rubber-soled shoe on a hardwood floor.

Ease of use – How easy was it to activate each clicker during training?

Each of these factors contributed to which clickers we recommend. Our top picks excel in both these areas.

Our testing observations

While testing the qualities listed above, we made some observations that are worth mentioning.

Most clickers have about the same loudness

Okay, I’ll admit that this surprised me a bit.

When we tested the sound, almost ever clicker measured within 2 decibels of each other. To put this simply, most clickers are as loud as each other.

However, our human testers didn’t think so. When we asked them to rank how loud each clicker was, we received very different feedback.

Why are the results so different? We suspect it comes down to the actual tone that each clicker makes rather than its loudness.

Clickers that made a loud, tinny sound were typically ranked as louder than those that made a crisper sound – even when they measured the same on our sound meter.

I guess the takeaway is that you can’t trust your ears to determine the loudness of a clicker.

However, two clickers stood out. One was ultra quiet, and the other was super loud. In fact, according to our testing, it was 10 times louder than the next clicker in terms of noise.

The softer sounding clicker is suitable for puppies and dogs that are startled by loud noises. The loudest clicker is better suited for training in an open field when your dog is a good distance away – I’ll reveal these clickers later in the review.

You’ll probably need to buy more than one clicker

Like most small pieces of plastic, clickers are easy to lose. Unless you are particularly organized, these small devices will get lost in your junk drawer or roll under the front seat of your car.

Even if you don’t lose it, there is always the possibility of it breaking. I accidentally crushed a clicker when I stepped on it while looking for where I dropped it.

Trust me when I say this:

It’s very frustrating going to train your dog only to realize you don’t have a clicker on hand.

Once you find your favorite clicker, buy a spare – just in case. This way, you won’t have to madly dash to the shops before your puppy training session.

Fortunately, many clickers come in packs of three or more. Whether you lose or break them, you’ll have another ready to use at a moment’s notice.

How you hold the clicker matters

When training your dog, it often feels like you need an extra hand. With holding your dog’s leash in one hand and treats in the other, juggling a clicker can be difficult.

Because of this, many clickers come with a method of attaching the clicker to your body.

And others strap to your finger.

Some clickers came without these attachments, but they featured loops or rings that can attach to a lanyard or keychain.

During testing, I found the finger strap variety of clicker to work the best. While other attachments kept the clicker nearby, you still had to reach for them.

The strap kept the clicker in the palm of your hand without having to grip it with your fingers – it was always within easy reach of my thumb.

Clicker training is a really great way of teaching your pet new things in a positive way and making learning fun for both of you. You can clicker train any animal, including dogs, cats, horses and rabbits.

What is clicker training?

Clicker training is a positive training method based on rewarding an animal for good behaviour. Your pet learns to understand that the sound of the click means “that’s right” and that a food treat is coming.

A click is more effective than your voice for two reasons. Firstly, your mood will influence how you sound and can make your voice inconsistent. Secondly, by the time you’ve praised your pet they might have moved on to something else. A clicker gives a quick, clear and consistent signal to your pet.

When animals are rewarded for the right behaviour, they’re more likely to repeat it and look for ways that they can offer that behaviour so they get a treat, making training more of a game than a chore for them – and you!

TOP TIP: The click must be an absolute guarantee that your pet will immediately get a reward. So the golden rule is: every time you click, give your pet a treat, even if you clicked at the wrong time.

First things first

All you need to get started is a special clicker and some food treats.

You can buy clickers online and at most pet shops and they only cost a couple of pounds. Before you start using one, check to make sure your pet isn’t sound sensitive. Some animals may be frightened by the unfamiliar sound of the click.

Make sure you’ve stocked up on the right kind of food treats – this is, literally, the key ingredient! For dogs the treat should be about the size of your little fingernail and ideas include cheesy treats or fresh chicken. If you’re training in a park where there are lots of distractions a really tasty treat, like ham, will help to keep them interested.

For cats you could use bits of shredded chicken or a piece of wet food on a teaspoon and there are lots of healthy bite-sized treats on the market especially for horses, like dried apple. For rabbits, try tiny pieces of carrot.

TOP TIP: During training sessions, your pet could get lots of treats so make sure you manage their overall diet so they don’t become overweight.

Getting started

Find a quiet area where you and your pet can concentrate. With your pet beside you, click once and then immediately give them a treat. Don’t point the clicker at your pet or click too close to their ears. Repeat this a few times until your pet becomes alert to the sound of the click and looks to you for a treat.

Clicker training works in four basic steps

Now your pet has made the association between a click and a treat you can start to teach them new skills.

One of the easiest things to start with is to teach them to touch an obvious target, like a mat on the floor, a ball on a stick or your hand.

As your pet approaches the target, click and treat. You don’t have to wait until they touch it because you’re shaping their behaviour and rewarding small steps towards the end goal. At this stage let the clicker speak for itself – if you say anything it could be distracting.

When your pet actually touches the target, click immediately and reward them with extra treats so they know they’ve hit the jackpot.

Soon your pet will see a target and go straight to it and at this point you can start to add a word that indicates what you want your pet to do. For instance, if your pet is about to touch the target, say “touch”, wait for them to touch the target and then click and treat.

Repeat this over the next few days until the cue alone prompts your pet to go and touch the target. Then you can progress to only clicking and treating the target touches that you have asked for on cue. So if your pet touches the target without you asking them to you don’t click and treat. Once your pet only touches the target when you ask them to you can start phasing out the click, which also means phasing out the treats. But it’s important that you still make sure they know they’ve done well, whether it’s telling them “good boy” or giving them a scratch, or giving them treats every now and then.

Clicker training your dog can be a really good way to get them to focus on what you’re asking them to do. You can use a clicker during training to help your dog recognise when they’ve carried out a behaviour that will lead to a reward.

If your dog is noise sensitive and the clicker sound is worrying them, you can muffle the sound by clicking the clicker from inside your pocket. If they are still scared of the sound you should use a marker word instead.

Time your clicker correctly

The timing of when you click the clicker is very important. Think of the click like you’re taking a photo of the behaviour that you want. You must only click when your dog is doing the exact action you’ve asked for.

For example, if you ask your dog to sit, but they also bark when they do so, if you click and reward them at this point you will also be encouraging them to bark too. In this instance, you would need to click before they bark, or only click and reward sits when they don’t bark.

The click must come exactly on the desired behaviour and it’s important that you reward your dog within 3 seconds of the click. Try dropping a ball and clicking at the exact moment it touches the floor to practice! It’s harder than it sounds. If you don’t click at right time to reward your dog, this could frustrate them and reduce the effectiveness of the click.

Step 1. Show your dog how the clicker works and what it does

Before you start using a clicker, you will need to associate the ‘click’ with something positive; the reward. This teaches your dog to anticipate their treat after they hear the ‘click’.

Make sure you do this in a calm environment, without any distractions. If your dog is food motivated, you can use some of your dog’s dinner, to avoid using too many treats.

Step 2. Start introducing the clicker when your dog does something good

Once you can see that your dog is anticipating the food when they hear the click, you can start introducing the clicker to mark good behaviour.

Ask your dog to do something simple that they already know, such as ‘sit’ or ‘down’. As soon your dog sits, click and reward them. Practice this regularly over a few, short sessions so that you can improve your timing and your dog can get used to using the clicker.

When you’re satisfied that your dog understands what the click means (they should immediately look to where the treats have been coming from), you can then move on to using the clicker to teach new behaviours.

Step 3. Use the clicker as part of dog training

Clicker training is a useful way to get a dog to work out what you want them to do of their own accord. This uses quite a bit of brain power for your dog and is a great way to mentally stimulate them.

To use the clicker, first decide what the final behaviour is that you would like your dog to do, and then break it down into small steps. These should be progressive steps that if all clicked, rewarded and built on in sequence will eventually get you to the final behaviour.

For example, if you are training your dog to sit on a mat, first reward any interest in the mat – click when your dog looks at the mat and then reward. Once they are doing this consistently, wait a few seconds for them to take a step towards the mat, and click and reward the step. Continue until eventually you hold out for a paw on the mat.

From there, then build up from two to three paws, until eventually you are only clicking and rewarding when all four paws on the mat.

The last step would be to ask your dog to sit on the mat, and then to click and reward when they successfully do that. Next you can start ask your dog for a down when then they are on the mat, and only click and reward this.

Step 4. Be consistent

It’s also important to be consistent in how you click. We would advise holding your clicker in the palm of your hand to the side of your body. Don’t hold your clicker like a remote and point it at your dog, as this can be intimidating.
