Below we look at some of the things you need to know when considering taking on a Golden Retriever, so you can determine whether it really is the right choice for your family.

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

The Golden Retriever is a large, active breed that will eat around three cups of food per day. This amount may be higher for very active dogs, or a little lower for those that don’t get as much exercise. Goldens are somewhat prone to becoming overweight, so you must feed an appropriate amount. Weigh your dog and use an accurate measurement to determine how much to feed.

Weigh the food out in the morning and feed this over two or three evenly split meals in the day. If you feed treats or offer additional food over the day, the amount of dog food you give should be adjusted accordingly. No more than 10% of the calories your dog eats should come from treats, and however many treats you give, you need to reduce daily food levels by this amount.

Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, clean drinking water, throughout the day and night.

This active breed does require a good amount of exercise every day. Expect to provide 90 minutes of walks a day, and supplement this with more intensive forms of exercise. The Golden Retriever not only excels in service roles, but it is a skilled working dog and can do very well taking part in canine sports. The breed does well in agility and flyball, and it can take to most sporting events.

As well as enjoying exercise on land, Retrievers love water. They were bred to hunt birds and were often used to hunt birds in rivers and other bodies of water. If possible, let your Retriever have some time swimming and paddling, as well as running across fields and through the trees. They might get muddy, but they will love the experience and it will help provide fulfillment and enrichment.

This intelligent breed is not only clever but also very keen to please its humans, and that is a combination that makes the Golden Retriever an easy dog to train. This ease of training is another reason that the breed is considered one of the best for first-time owners. Retrievers will respond to food-based treats, but their desire to please means they will also respond to verbal and physical praise. Be animated and offer lots of praise when your Retriever performs a desirable task but avoid shouting or scolding your dog.

Sign up for puppy classes when your dog is young. Classes like this will teach your dog some basic commands but they will also arm you with the knowledge of how to continue with effective training even away from the classes. Puppy classes are also a great way to start socializing your dog with other people and dogs. Continue this socialization at home, on walks, and in dog parks.

Although a Golden Retriever has a lot going for it, one of the biggest challenges associated with owning this breed comes from its coat. The Golden’s coat is beautiful, but it does take a lot of maintenance and the breed is known to be a heavy shedder, so you need to be prepared for a lot of dog hair around the house, in the car, and even on your clothes. Brush daily to prevent the coat from getting matted. Matted hair is uncomfortable and unpleasant for your dog. The Golden Retriever also benefits from having a bath every month or two to help get rid of dust and dirt and also to manage the dead hairs.

Nails will need trimming. How often you have to trim nails will depend on whether they get worn down naturally on walks. Dogs that have some time walking on concrete and other hard, abrasive surfaces, do not need to have their nails trimmed as often, but if you walk your Retriever exclusively on grass and soft surfaces, you should expect to trim every two months or so. It is possible to trim your dog’s nails yourself, or you can have it done by a professional groomer.

Teeth also need brushing. Brush between three and seven times a week. Poor dental health is common in dogs, and it arises because owners do not brush regularly.

Check inside your dog’s ears regularly. It is best to do this when you bathe your dog, but you should try and check more frequently. Some owners check whenever they brush their dogs, which will help avoid infections. This is even more important if your Retriever goes swimming regularly because water in rivers and other bodies of water can harbor bacteria that transfer to the warm, damp ear canals.

Health and Conditions 🏥

Golden Retrievers are prone to certain hereditary illnesses that owners need to keep watch for. If you spot any early signs of these conditions, visiting a vet and having your dog checked out could help prevent major problems.

Hip dysplasia occurs when the bones around the hip joint do not align properly. It can cause discomfort and may lead to considerable levels of pain. It can also result in arthritis developing as your dog ages. Elbow dysplasia is a similar problem but occurs in the elbow joint.

Cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy are conditions that affect the eyes and vision. Check for visible signs of cataracts, such as a milky shine on the eye’s surface, and for signs that your dog is suffering from night blindness.

Male vs Female

As is common with most dog breeds, male Golden Retrievers will grow to be a little heavier and bigger than females. Some owners claim that males become more attached to their humans while females are independent. Both are still considered affectionate and loyal dogs, but the female might not require quite as much attention and may be less likely to suffer separation anxiety.

However, traits like this are more commonly determined by the dog’s individual character rather than gender.

Little-Known Facts About the Golden Retriever

The sporting group is a group of dog breeds that not only enjoy walks but tend to require more intense forms of exercise. The Golden Retriever will enjoy going on long walks and hikes with its owner, but it will also enjoy getting out and chasing a ball or playing fetch. The breed also does very well in canine sports and their intelligence means they can learn and master most sports.

If your Retriever does not get enough exercise, it can cause depression and it may also lead to your dog displaying unwanted behaviors such as destructive chewing and excessive barking. Because the Retriever loves to eat, lots of exercise is important to help ensure that it doesn’t put on excess weight, too.

Golden Retrievers Make Excellent Therapy Dogs

Retrievers really have been used in virtually all service dog roles, although they don’t tend to do well as guard dogs or guardian dogs because their disposition is too friendly. One area where the breed does excel, however, is in therapy work. They exhibit empathy and seem to understand what people need and when. As such, they are used in hospitals and other settings to comfort patients.

They Are Naturally Mouthy

Although they are used in many service roles today, the Golden Retriever was originally bred as a retriever. This meant that they would chase and collect birds that had been killed by their hunter handlers. They were considered exceptional for the role because they were attentive, at home in the water, and they would gently carry birds back without damaging them.

Today’s Golden Retriever is still happy using its mouth to retrieve items, and you may need to train a young Retriever not to grab your hand and pull you around.

Hundreds of golden retrievers, and their owners, have gathered at the Highland ancestral home of the breed.

The first golden retriever puppies were born at Guisachan House in Glen Affric 155 years ago.

They were bred by aristocrat Sir Dudley Marjoribanks, who wanted a gun dog suited to Scottish Highland terrain.

Owners from across the UK, continental Europe, North America, Australia and Japan have been meeting at the ruins of Guisachan House.

A series of events, including talks, workshops, demonstrations and a night-time procession, have taken place this week at the site near Tomich, south of Inverness, and nearby Cannich.

Thursday was expected to see one of the world’s largest gatherings of the breed in one place, with hundreds meeting up below the ruined mansion house.

Carol Henry, secretary of the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland, said the aim of the gathering was to keep alive knowledge of the breed.

She said established breeders were mindful of protecting the dogs’ qualities and temperament.

But Mrs Henry said this had been put at risk by irresponsible breeding during Covid pandemic lockdowns.

She said: "We want to hold on to the confidence, the biddability, the companionship and loyalty — all the things the golden retriever was built on."

Dogs from more than 12 countries including Canada, the US, New Zealand, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Czech Republic, Italy, Croatia and Estonia are at Guisachan.

On Tuesday, a procession was held which started at 22:00 and involved a mile-long walk to the ruined house where the dogs and their owners were met by a piper.

Thunderstorms did not materialise as forecast, but biting Highland midges were out in force.

The night ended with a rendition of The Proclaimers’ song I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and more bagpipe tunes.

Over a number of years, the gatherings have taken place every five years and dates have fallen on milestone anniversaries, including the 150th in 2018.

The first litter of golden retrievers was born in 1868 to a Tweed water spaniel, a breed now extinct, and yellow wavy-coated retriever.

The puppies were called Primrose, Cowslip and Crocus. Some histories of the breed report the litter having four pups.

More than 40 years later, in 1913, the golden retriever was officially recognised as a breed by The Kennel Club, the UK’s largest organisation concerned with dog health, welfare and training.

Marjoribanks, a businessman and Liberal MP who was also known by the title Lord Tweedmouth, bred the retrievers at his Guisachan estate.

The house had fallen into ruin by the 1960s.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States for good reason—they are intelligent, loyal, easy to train, and very affectionate. “Goldens,” as they’re often called, make wonderful family dogs because they are great with young children and other pets when socialized from puppyhood.

Golden Retrievers are medium-sized sporting dogs that weigh 55–75 pounds, with females weighing on the lower end of this range. Their height can range from 21–24 inches tall. They have a broad head, short ears, deep chest, and muscular build.

Caring for a Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are known for their thick, water-repellent, lustrous golden coats. But their golden fur can range in color, so you can find white Golden Retrievers to red Golden Retrievers.

No matter the color, Golden Retrievers have a double coat. This means that they have a thick undercoat of short hair covered by a layer of longer hair. Due to this double coat, Golden Retrievers shed a lot. They also tend to develop matted hair behind their ears and on their hind limbs. So, Golden Retrievers require a lot of grooming—either at home or by a professional groomer—to keep their coats healthy.

Goldens have a moderate amount of energy, even in their senior years. They enjoy a wide variety of activities such as running, going on long walks, retrieving, and swimming. They make excellent therapy dogs and guide dogs for people with impaired vision.

Golden Retriever Health Issues

The average Golden Retriever lifespan is 10–12 years, and they’re typically healthy dogs. However, due to poor breeding, some Golden Retrievers may develop a handful of health issues.

Make sure to do your research when looking to adopt a Golden Retriever, or find a reputable Golden Retriever breeder so that medical issues are less likely.

Hot Spots

Due to their thick coats and love for swimming, Golden Retrievers are prone to developing hot spots, localized areas of skin that are inflamed and infected, most often with bacteria and/or yeast. Hot spots develop more often in warm, humid environments and after swimming because moisture gets trapped near the skin. This moist skin causes discomfort that leads to scratching, chewing, and licking. These behaviors then cause the normal microbes on the skin to multiply, and the skin becomes inflamed and infected.

A hot spot usually develops quickly and can lead to hair loss, redness, and moist skin that may ooze, crust, or develop thick scabs. If you notice any signs of hot spots in your Golden, take them to a veterinarian. Hot spots typically resolve quickly with medication.

Atopic Dermatitis (Atopy)

Atopic dermatitis (atopy) is an inflammatory and extremely itchy skin condition that Golden Retrievers are predisposed to. It can be triggered by environmental allergens (such as insects, fleas, pollen, dust mites, or mold) or by a food allergy, often to the protein in the diet. Goldens are believed to have a genetic predisposition.

Symptoms usually develop between 2–6 years of age, so regular veterinary visits are important to monitor your dog’s skin health. Golden Retrievers with atopy are constantly scratching, chewing, or licking themselves. This self-trauma leads to hair loss, thickened skin that can be red or black in color, or a rash consisting of macules (discolored skin) or papules (raised skin lesions).

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder that happens when the thyroid gland loses its ability to produce thyroid hormones, leading to symptoms such as:

Golden Retrievers are predisposed to hypothyroidism and typically develop symptoms when they are middle-aged. Although this endocrine disorder is common, it can be well-managed with lifelong medication.

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is an inherited orthopedic condition where the hip joint doesn’t properly align. This can cause pain and, over time, arthritis. Hip dysplasia can develop in one or both hip joints.

Some Golden Retrievers are born with congenital hip dysplasia—which is rare—while others can develop this condition during their senior years. Symptoms include:

Reputable Golden Retriever breeders make sure their dogs are screened for this genetic condition, so it’s best to purchase a Golden Retriever puppy from a breeder that has had their dogs certified with a PennHIP evaluation. Hip dysplasia can be managed with joint supplements and certain medications, but in serious cases, surgical intervention may be required.

Elbow dysplasia encompasses several different inherited orthopedic conditions that ultimately lead to degenerative joint disease (DJD) within the elbow. X-rays or CT scans are used to diagnose elbow dysplasia, and the condition is treated with surgery, joint supplements, and/or anti-inflammatory and pain medications.

Heart Problems

Subaortic valvular stenosis (SAS) is a genetic heart condition that Golden Retriever puppies inherit from their parents. It develops during the first year of life, so responsible breeding is key to ensuring prevention of this condition.

SAS occurs when fibrous tissue slowly forms in the heart and causes an obstruction of blood flow. Over time, this condition causes the heart to stop functioning properly, resulting in heart damage.

Golden Retrievers with SAS often have a heart murmur that can be heard during a routine physical exam, but dogs with mild to moderate SAS may not show any symptoms. However, those with severe SAS are lethargic, tired after short periods of exercise, may collapse, and can die suddenly.

What To Feed a Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever puppies should be fed a large-breed, high-quality puppy formula until they are 1 year to 18 months old. Once they reach maturity, they will need to be transitioned to a large-breed, high-quality adult.

How To Feed a Golden Retriever

Full-grown Golden Retrievers do well with twice-daily feedings, in the morning and evening. Golden Retriever puppies need to eat more frequently—about three or four times each day on a consistent schedule.

Golden Retrievers love to eat, so a slow feeder bowl can be a great way to help them slow down their eating and prevent digestion issues. If your dog eats too quickly, it can cause vomiting and possibly bloat—an emergency situation where the stomach twists on itself.

Once a Golden Retriever is 1 year old, transition them to a large-breed adult formula that has fewer calories to prevent unwanted weight gain. Your veterinarian is your best resource for determining how much to feed your Golden Retriever to maintain a healthy weight.

Starting a Golden Retriever on a joint supplement early in life can help slow down or possibly prevent arthritis. Talk to your vet before giving your pup any supplements like Movoflex, Synovi Chews, Dasuquin, Cosequin, or Flexadin.

Another supplement to consider for a Golden Retriever is omega-3 fatty acid (fish oil).
